In August 2020 I was absolutely thrilled to have been chosen by Chester Visual Arts to create artwork to feature in their Digital Artbox inspired by the V&A exhibition “Chance and Control: Art in the Age of Computers”. This was hugely exciting for me and I thoroughly enjoyed working on this project.
The Digital Artbox Commissions are part of CVA’s learning programme, which encourages arts engagement and participation in Cheshire by working with artists, schools, youth organisations and adult learners. Visit the Chester Visual Arts Learning Programme page for more information. The commission is inspired by the major V&A touring exhibition ‘Chance and Control: Art in the Age of Computers’, which CVA brought to Chester in 2019. |
My activity proposal was to create an educational colouring sheet/map of the history of visual arts. The colouring sheet is in the form of a timeline, featuring important advances in technology within the visual arts. It also includes individuals such as artists who played a huge part in or contributed to these developments over the past 50 years. This is the main piece of a downloadable online activity pack that also includes printable sheets around the theme of Art in the age of computers. The pack includes other printable downloads such as a themed word search, information sheets on each image within the colouring sheet and an inspiration sheet.
This inspiration sheet is a fun page on which a child could write down their own ideas of the kind of technology that could become available to us in the future. The aim of this is to get children thinking creatively and to let their imagination run wild based on the information they have read so far, there is also space to draw an idea or invention. It’s a way of helping them to understand that technology is constantly changing and developing, that pushing boundaries is important in the visual arts.
Whilst the activities in the pack are educational, they are also designed to inspire and promote creativity. I want to show what has been achieved so far in technology and get kids thinking of what could happen in the future, how else artwork could be created. This could be a fun activity brainstorming the technology they would like to see and use as artists in years to come.
